I had a front door and a roof replaced a few years ago. I never claimed the Energy Credit for them. How many years prior to the current tax year can improvements be claimed?

The credit can only be claimed in the year you paid for the home improvement eligible for the credit.  You will have to amend the tax return for that year.  Note - if the improvement was made in 2018 or earlier you cannot file an amended return for a refund since the 3 years from the due date of the tax return has expired.

You would need to amend your prior year's return - you take the credit in the year you paid for and installed the door and/or roof.   Generally, for a credit or refund, you must file Form 1040-X (amended return) within 3 years after the date you timely filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.   Allow the IRS up to 16 weeks to process the amended return.
