Hi,
This year is my first time using TurboTax. I've purchased a desktop version so that I can do tax for other family members as well.
I've also registered an online version for free to try. I've finished up to the federal level for my tax on the desktop version, and I entered the exact same information on the online version. The federal tax due come out different on these 2 versions: I got $8173 due on desktop, and $8366 due on online. The only difference is that I haven't started my NY state on the desktop version (because I haven't confirmed to use my NY state tax filing), but the online shows my NY state tax.
I've went through all income and deduction sections and all numbers are identical, but the federal tax due are different. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Cheryl Kao

You have to compare each line on the returns. You know you can download the .tax2019 file from online (for free) and open it in the Desktop program. But you will first have to download the state program. The you can compare all the worksheets too.
To continue in the desktop version see this…….
I can think of several reasons. Did you enter any 1099Div or capital gains? Check your entries for those. Do you owe any 10% Early Withdrawal Penalty for a 1099R withdrawal? Check your birthdates. Make sure each W2 and 1099 is assigned to the right spouse. Did you have self employment income?
Start by comparing the Form 1040 in the desktop and online tax returns line by line. You don't have to download the .tax2019 file from Online to see the Form 1040. (See below.) What is the first line on Form 1040 that is different (by more than a dollar or two)? What are the exact amounts on that line on the two returns? Once you know where the difference is, you can dig deeper, if necessary, to find the cause. Knowing where the difference is on Form 1040 will tell you where to look in the underlying forms, schedules, or worksheets.
In the desktop software you can view Form 1040 in forms mode, or "print" the tax return to create a PDF. For instructions to view your Form 1040 in TurboTax Online see the following FAQ.
How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?
I had a similar experience, only the differences were much more significant. 🙄
I had the same issue and the 2024 online version said I get a refund of $1600, but the desktop said I owe over 5k both standard deduction with the same income. standard deduction
There has to be something different entered between the desktop and TurboTax Online versions. When you open the desktop version, you can select Continue from TurboTax Online. When you do that, the desktop software will use the same return you were working on in TurboTax Online. @m243
