I make $40,000 and file single why do I owe $3,000 when nothing has changed with my filing status and I only received a slight raise last year?

I have changed nothing from last year and my filing status is exactly the same as it always has been. The only change is a slight raise but this does not explain $3,000 owed.

Did you withhold less tax in your paycheck than last year?

Hi @Katie.steinborn. I'm sorry you're not getting a refund this year! The changes in tax reform have affected the refund amount that many Americans are receiving this year. TurboTax works hard to get you your maximum possible refund, which is backed up by our Maximum Refund Guarantee (https://turbotax.intuit.com/corp/guarantees.jsp).

For next year, you may want to take a look at our Withholding Calculator (https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/w4/) and consider adjusting your withholding so you can better control whether you'd like a bigger refund or a bigger paycheck.
