My child did their taxes before us, and did not select the box to allow someone else to claim them as a dependent. They amended their taxes immediately after noticing the mistake, around 4 weeks ago, and we just tried to file our taxes, but they were rejected due to them still not allowing someone to claim them as a dependent. How do we go about this? We want to claim them in order to get the education credit, as they did not claim it so we could.

You will have to file on paper and mail your return. You do not need to wait-----the system will not be corrected for many months even if your child amended. This happens often with students who do not understand that they will mess things up for their parents by saying they cannot be claimed as someone else's dependent.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
The system will never let you efile with their info on the return ... so you can either remove them to efile and amend later to add them back OR simply mail in the return as is. Mailed in returns are expected to take 3 months or longer and amended returns 6 months or longer ... so you have a decision to make.
My daughter forgot to check the box that said I can claim her as a dependent. She filed. I was unable to efile my taxes as a result. We had her amend her return. I still could not efile. I had her get an IP pin and I still could not efile. We tried one more option where I requested an IP pin for this year, and I submitted efile with her IP pin and my IP pin (but not my wife's) and this time the efile went through! 2024 tax year, and just today it went through.
