The simplest explanation would be that you did not have enough federal and/or state tax withheld from your paychecks during the year, so now you owe. We cannot see your tax return or your W-2. Without any personal information, if you tell us your filing status (single, married,...etc ...any dependent children?) and what is in box 1 and box 2 of your W-2 we can start there to see.

one possible reason is irregular paychecks. Periods where you get lower than average pay may result in under-withholding. The reverse is true in periods where you get higher than average pay. Because of graduated income tax rates the difference in withholding may not cancel out. Also, bonuses may have a flat withholding % not matching your effective tax rate.
