For my 2020 taxes, Turbo Tax automatically copied the $300 max charitable contributions from 1040 line 10b over to my New York state return. (I took the standard deduction). Now I'm doing 2021 taxes and I have the same $300 on my federal return. This year on 1040 line 12b. But it was not automatically copied over to my New York return (that I can tell). The federal adjustments line (line 18) on the NY IT-201 form is blank.
Is that a TurboTax error this year? Or was it a TT error in 2020? I don't think the NY law changed. I looked on the NYS department of taxation website and it shows the same instructions for both 2020 and 2021.
Thanks.

New York State does not allow the $300 deduction on top of the standard deduction. You are only allowed to deduct charitable contributions if you itemize deductions on your New York return.

Thanks for the answer. But why was it included in my NYS return for 2020? Did the NYS rules change from 2020 to 2021?
Actually, I think I see. On my 2020 NYS return the $300 was included in the federal adjustments to income on form IT-201. But then it gets subtracted back out on form IT-558.
My question now is, why was that same thing not done for 2021? TT just didn't include the $300 at all on the IT-201. So the end result is the same. But a little confusing as to why it was done differently in 2020 vs. 2021.
Do you have an IT-558 included with your IT-201?
No. I have the IT-558 for 2020, but not for 2021. The result is the same for both 2020 and 2021, but it looks like TT handled it differently for each year. I'm just wondering why.
