Did you e-file the return? Was the return accepted or rejected? If you used the current online software -- online is only for 2022. If you used the current online software for a different year, then the return is all wrong. But if it was accepted, you have to wait for the IRS to fully process it and then file an amended return to fix the mistake. You cannot stop an e-file or get it back.
If the return was rejected then you can clear it out and use the 2022 program for your 2022 return instead.
Provide some details about what you did so we can be more helpful.
Once a tax return has been filed it cannot be changed, canceled or retrieved. Nor can the online tax return be cleared and started over once the tax return has been filed.
Since you filed using the incorrect tax year information the IRS will be sending you a letter inquiring about your tax return. You can then file an amended 2022 tax return with the correct information.
You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
