I had no idea there was an error and I filed my taxes with the deferment included. I don't want to defer--I want to pay it now. How can I do so?
Simply mail a check in for the full amount. make sure your Social Security Number is on the check as well as the tax year (2020).
You may also pay it online.
As of 4.25, this is still bugged on the online version.
I had a credit. I don't think I even reviewed the deferral section on the deductions area, or if i did, i said, no i don't want to defer.
went to federal review time, and it prompted me to fill out schedule SE-T, line 18.
I filled in the correct amount of income i had from end of mar - december, as the form is looking for.
Suddenly I got a bunch of money back on my return. I dug in further, and despite me not asking for a deferral, I was getting one anyway.
If I go to the section on deductions, and again, say explicitly NO, i do not want a deferral, that number still does NOT go away. This is a clear error in the software.
The only workaround is to delete the form, and put a 0 in the box when prompted in the final check. This is not ideal, as though I agree you won't be audited for it, you're still technically not filling the form out correctly and submitting it to the IRS.
Turbotax needs to fix this asap.
To get past this screen so you can file your taxes, you need to update Schedule SE-T.
The process: delete Sch SE-T, take a quick run through of the self-employment to recalculate Sch SE-T, and then turn off the Max Deferral.
To do this in TurboTax, follow these steps:
First, delete Sch SE-T that applies by following these steps:
From the left menu, select Tax Tools.
Select Tools.
Scroll to Delete a Form.
Scroll to Sch SE-T, select Delete, confirm the deletion.
Next, to replace Sch SE-T, return to the self-employment income & expenses interview in the Income & Expenses section and select Edit/Add.
Select Edit for your business.
Scroll down to Done so that the Sch SE is recalculated.
Finish any other questions in the self-employment interview and click Continue.
Lastly, revisit the section for the Self-employment tax deferral entry:
Return to the Deductions & Credits section.
Scroll to Tax relief related to COVID-19 and Show More.
Select Self-employment tax deferral and select Revisit.
Answer Yes at the next screen to get back to Let's start by getting your eligible income.
If you do not want to defer any self-employment income, "Enter your eligible self-employment income" should be blank.
Select Continue.
At Tell us how much you'd like to defer, "Enter amount" should be blank.
Select Continue.
Scroll down and select Wrap up Tax Breaks and Continue.
Run through the Federal Review again.
Hi Catina - this does not work, because if I answer "Yes" i want to defer income, the next screen tells me i'm not eligible due to the return i'm getting.
This would be a solution for someone who owes the IRS money at that point though. TBT needs to address this for people who have a refund.
I thought about creating some additional income to give myself a due amount, but I am worried that would have secondary effects that would be worse than this problem.
it depends. After you entered your income and expenses, did you have a net profit in your self-employed income? Remember, this election will defer you from paying self-employment taxes based off of a net profit.
Unfortunately I didn't and never do defer anything but TurboTax must have automatically deferred it for me and now I just got a surprise notice from IRS that I have a hefty amount due. I had no idea there was anything "deferred" Certainly not prepared for this and not thrilled with turbo tax due to this obviously. Looking for another service for next time.
