I filed my Daughter's (Martha G. Licht yrs) 2020 return, it was accepted and she has received a refund. She claimed my granddaughter (Mia R Licht 4 yrs) as a dependent and i found out later I could claim my granddaughter on my taxes. I sent my taxes in later and they were rejected because both returns claimed my granddaughter. How do i amend my daughter's return to remove my granddaughter as her dependent? She will likely need to return some of her refund. Does my daughter need to fill out a form to transfer my granddaughter to my tax return? It would seem i could refile my return and somehow attach the paperwork transferring my granddaughter as my dependent. Can i do this electronically as my notice regarding correcting my return is due 5/21? I need some help regarding the processes to accomplish the above actions.
@TAL246917 Sorry no you can't efile. Once a ssn has been used you can't efile it again. You will have to print and mail now to claim her. You don't need to attach anything special to claim her.

I have had my grandson as long as I can remember until March 2020 when I was not able to leave my dying sister and she pass July 2020 so I have been here for him since that day July 10 2020.
@henrymae1 You have not actually asked a question. Are you trying to determine if you can claim your grandchild as your dependent for 2020? If you were his custodial parent for at least 183 nights in 2020 then you can claim him. Is there a problem? Did someone else already claim him? If so, you can claim him and print, sign and mail your tax return if you are unable to e-file it.
I had two grandchildren in which I filed why is it that I only got one grandchild on ky tax when the turbo tax help me to file?
@wajones6512 We cannot see your tax return or your account. You have not provided any details about your grandchildren. Did you claim both children on your federal return? Were both of them listed as dependents on your federal Form 1040? How old are the children?
And what do you mean -- exactly --- by "I only got one grandchild" ----- what did you not "get" for the other child on your state return?
I have temporary custody of my grandchild since March 2021, can I claim him for taxes?
you can claim grandchild as a qualifying child if all these tests are met
• has the same principal abode as you for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences like for school are ignored
• if not a full-time student, under 19 at the end of the tax year. If a full-time student, under 24 at the end of the tax year.
• hasn't provided over ½ own support
• didn't file a joint return unless there was no tax liability but merely filing jointly to facilitate refund of taxes withheld or estimates paid
or you can claim the grandchild as a qualifying relative if all these tests are met
• gross income for 2020 less than $4,300
• you provided over ½ support
• isn't a qualifying child of another taxpayer

You did not mention her age so will assume she is under the age of 19. She must meet all the requirements under the Qualifying Child rules for you to claim her a s your dependent on a 2021 tax return.
To be a Qualifying Child -
1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them.
2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year, (b) under age 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student or (c) any age and permanently and totally disabled.
3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year. Temporary absences while away at college are considered living with you.
4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year.
5. If the child meets the rules to be a qualifying child of more than one person, you must be the person entitled to claim the child as a qualifying child.
6. The child must be a U.S. citizen or U.S., Canada or Mexico resident for some portion of the year.
7. The child must be younger than you unless disabled.

You can claim your grandchildren as dependents under the Qualifying Child rules if they meet all the requirements under the rule.

You can claim your son-in-law as a dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules if he meets all the requirements under the rule.
To be a Qualifying Relative -
1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld.
2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household.
3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $4,300 (social security does not count) in 2021
4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year.
6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse.
I need to add a depend
@Jolanda1234 If you have NOT e-filed yet, you can add a dependent in My Info. You will need your dependent's Social Security number.
Or....did you already e-file?
That really stinks. 69 yo on a fixed income (with no support) raising 2 grandchildren, has to get a job, pay a sitter if it isn't during school (leave work if the school calls). The government wants us to take in our children's children, but not help financially. Laws need to change! Exceptions should be made. We shouldn't have to struggle. I live off Credit cards & that will be over soon.
Is there a way to help folks like us?. A tax break of some sort? A loop hole, not just for the rich?
