amend question

My wife filed separately (opposed to jointly on accident) and I have not yet finalized my taxes through Turbotax. She has received her refund and we realize for a variety of reasons she needs to amend her taxes so we can file jointly.

My taxes are more complex as I have a job with salary and also earn separate income being  self employed. The amend 1040x form seems too simple for my taxes (expenses and such) and being that I haven't filed yet what is our next step?

amend question

Your wife already filed and the two of you want to amend to a joint return?  Then you have to wait for her return to be fully processed so you can amend that one to make it a joint return.  You cannot file your return with your spouse's SSN on it--it would be rejected.

So you will be going to some extra work.

amend question

Thanks for the link.

Being that my taxes are not done, should I finalize them through turbo tax with the filing jointly selected and then have my wife amend hers?

The concern is she received a refund already.

amend question

When you amend you will enter your info and fill out Schedule C in her account just like you would do it on your return and account.  On the new amended Joint return She will be listed first as the primary taxpayer so keep that in mind while entering your info.  You will have to use the the Self Employed version to enter your self employment.  So you may have to upgrade her account and pay the difference.

amend question

No.  (We we're typing at the same time).

you will have to amend her return to be Joint and add you info and income to hers.  You will not use your account this year.  You have to re enter everything into her account.  Sorry.
