2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution

I received a Covid related disaster distribution in TY 2020.  I elected to spread the distribution over three years.

I do not know how to enter the original 1099-R in the income portion of this year's tax return.  Obviously, I did not receive a new 1099 for this distribution.  Do I just put in the third that I will owe for 2021? Turbo tax doesn't make it clear how to enter this, just states "you will have to revisit 1099-R income area."

I filled out the new 8915-F form already, but like I said, it's not clear how to enter the 1/3 owed part?

Also, if I elect to repay this 1/3 before the tax filing deadline, do I have to enter the 1099-R at all or just report that I repaid in the 8915-F section?

You do not enter the 2020 Form 1099-R.  Please delete the form you entered.

When asked if you received a Form 1099-R answer NO.  On the following screens where asked about a disaster distribution answer YES.

The 1/3 of the 2020 distribution is entered on the screen Did (your name) Take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution you answer YES.

Enter the 2nd year 1/3 amount of the 2020 distribution in box for the 2020 Form 8915-E Line 9 if the distribution was from an 401(k) or Enter in the box for the 2020 Form 8915-E Line 17 if from an IRA

You only enter any repayments made in 2021 on the screen asking about repayments.

I followed your prior instructions and entered the 1/3 distribution on line 17.

Several screens after this, it takes me to "Wrap Up Income".  A few screens later, I then reach a screen that states, "did either of you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 & 2020? If I check the "yes" box, then next screen states, "You'll need to visit the Form 1099-R retirement topic."  Do I just ignore this because you said I shouldn't enter anything in the 1099 income section?

I'm confused, because I do not see where that 1/3 is added to my income totals once I fill out the 8915-f section.

The steps are listed here for you to try to help.  The following steps should be used to enter your COVID qualifying distribution.  Do Not enter a FEMA code because this doesn't have one. You must have your Form 8915-E from your 2020 tax return.

  1. Wages & Income > Retirement Plans and Social Security
  2. IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) >  Start, Revisit or Update > Continue
  3. Answer Yes  'Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?
  4. Answer Yes, You had a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution
  5. Complete the Information using your 2020 Tax return > Continue
  6. Enter any amount you may have  repaid in 2021, if applicable
  7. Finish the entry for your spouse if applicable or just click Continue
  8. Complete any additional retirement questions as you move through this section
  9. Continue until you have finished and returned back to the Wages & Income Screen.
  10. Do NOT stop and change sections without completing it.

Preview your Form 1040 after you complete the section and continue after the income section.
