Hello,

Not everyone is required to file an income tax return each year. Generally, if your total income for the year doesn't exceed the standard deduction plus one exemption and you aren't a dependent to another taxpayer, then you don't need to file a federal tax return. The amount of income that you can earn before you are required to file a tax return also depends on the type of income, your age and your filing status.

Dependent tax filings

All taxpayers who are claimed as a dependent on someone's tax return are subject to different IRS filing requirements, regardless of whether they are children or adults. Since a dependent is unable to claim their own exemption, a tax return is necessary when their earned income is more than the standard deduction for a single taxpayer, which in 2013 is $6,100. However, the threshold decreases to more than $1,000 when the dependent's income is unearned, such as from dividends and interest.

That being said she does not have to but she can.

There are years when you are not required to file a tax return but may want to. If you have federal taxes withheld from you paycheck, the only way you can receive a refund when excessive amounts are withheld is if you file a tax return. For example, if you are a single taxpayer who earns $2,500 during the year, with $300 withheld for federal tax, then you are entitled to a refund for the entire $300 since you earned less than the standard deduction plus one exemption. The IRS does not automatically issue refunds without a tax return being filed.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax, I hope this helps!

Yes, you can file a tax return.  You may be eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit if the dependents are your children and under age 17

If he had federal income taxes withheld from his wages then he should get a refund for the taxes withheld.  The Standard Deduction for someone filing as Single in 2019 is $12,200 even when being claimed as a dependent.

Yes, if your dependent had W-2 taxes withheld, they may file a return to get a refund of the taxes paid.

A child who has only earned income must file a return only if the total is more than the standard deduction for the year.  For 2019, the standard deduction for a dependent child is total earnings plus $350, up to a maximum of $12,200.  Thus, a child can earn up to $12,200 without paying income tax.

Your state may have other reporting requirements for a dependents income and may be less then the federal requirements, so check with your state tax department website for more information.

What if an 18 year old makes more than $15,000 would they have anything in return?

@giovannag1 That is not enough information.   Was the income reported on a W-2?  Was tax withheld?  It would depend on how much tax the employer withheld--prepare a tax return to see.

Or if the income was for self-employment---or income reported on a 1099Misc then there would be self-employment tax and ordinary income tax owed.

Try using Free File to prepare a tax return.  An eighteen year old is likely someone else's dependent, so that must be indicated in My Info.

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $36,000 or less, or $69,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit

My daughter (19 yr old full-time student) earned $4,400.00 in W2 income in 2020.

1.  Does she need to file her own return?

2.  If not, can I include her W2 info into my return?

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  They don't have to file if they only have W2 income under 12,400 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.

To file a separate return for a dependent in the Online version you need to set up a new account separate from the parents.  Online is only good for one return per account.  You can use the same email address for 5 accounts.  You can probably use the Free Edition or the Free File website

Be sure on the dependent return you check the box that says you can be claimed on someone else’s return.  If your only income is W2 and under 12,400 you do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.
