Where do I enter expenses related to travel when officiating USA Swimming meets? I am not paid for officiating the meets.

Yes - you can deduct your travel expenses as your charitable donations, since you are not being paid for officiating (USA Swimming is a qualified non-for-profit organization).

Most common expenses related to travel are allowed. Here is what the IRS defines as deductible travel expenses:

  • Air, rail, and bus transportation,
  • Out-of-pocket expenses for your car,
  • Taxi fares or other costs of transportation between the airport or station and your hotel,
  • Lodging costs, and
  • The cost of meals.

Please be sure to keep detailed records regarding all expenses related to the trip.

In TurboTax, you may enter your mileage and travel expenses, out-of-pocket pocket expenses as follows:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Deductions & Credits
  3. Charitable Donations, select Donations to Charity in 2016; once charity name is entered,  select Mileage and travel expenses; enter total cost for your travel.
