Yes - you can deduct your travel expenses as your charitable donations, since you are not being paid for officiating (USA Swimming is a qualified non-for-profit organization).
Most common expenses related to travel are allowed. Here is
what the IRS defines as deductible travel expenses:
- Air, rail, and bus transportation,
- Out-of-pocket expenses for your car,
- Taxi fares or other costs of transportation between the airport or station and your hotel,
- Lodging costs, and
- The cost of meals.
Please be sure to keep detailed records regarding all expenses related to the trip.
In TurboTax, you may enter your mileage and travel expenses, out-of-pocket pocket expenses as follows:
- Federal Taxes
- Deductions & Credits
- Charitable Donations, select Donations to Charity in 2016; once charity name is entered, select Mileage and travel expenses; enter total cost for your travel.
