Will I be able to deduct the sales tax on a motorhome purchased in 2018 in addition to regular sales tax tables in 2018 as in previous years?

I know I'll be limited to $10,000 max deduction for sales/property taxes, but the amount I paid for sales tax on the motorhome will make a difference if I will itemize or not this year (2018). The sales tax module in Turbo Tax won't be available until 1/17/19.

SALES TAX

You can enter the sales tax you paid for the motorhome you purchased in 2018 by going to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid> Sales Tax.  You will be asked if you paid sales tax on a major purchase, and you will be able to enter the sales tax you paid for your new vehicle.

Sales tax is an itemized deduction.  If your state has a state income tax, you have to choose between using the deduction for your state tax paid OR the sales tax deduction, whichever is higher.  The TT process will suggest one or the other as you prepare your return.

“Major purchases” that you can enter for the sales tax deduction include:

Motor Vehicles (cars, trucks, motor homes, RV’s, sport utility vehicles and off-road vehicles

Aircraft or boats

Mobile homes

Manufactured housing

Building materials for major home improvements

You cannot deduct: furniture, jewelry, home electronics such as TV’s or computers

Thank you. That's what I've done in previous years. This year when I try it, I get a note saying the IRS is still working on it. Expect the form mid January. That doesn't help when trying to plan deductions for 2018 (1 week left).

Sorry--there are many forms not ready yet.  And now a government shutdown.  No way to speed up the IRS.

I know. Don't really need the form now as long as I know I can deduct the motorhome sales tax on top of the regular sales tax. Hoping that wasn't one of the changes in the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The IRS scrapped ALL of the old 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ and schedules and replaced them with the new 1040 "post card" form and 5 new schedules.   Many of those new forms are still in the draft form and final versions (and instructions) have not been released as of now by the IRS.    There are projected dates for those forms, but that can change if the IRS is shut down for any length of time.
