Why did TurboTax say I didn’t qualify for the EIC when I meet all of the qualifications?

@Ak1234  also, while there are a number of posts on these boards about that EIC letter, no one has posted they received any additional money or a response from the IRS request.

Calculating EITC is automatic in Turbo Tax, so it's surprising these letters are circulating.

What do you have on Line 27a?

Thanks for your response. Didn’t know there were others who received the same letter. I must’ve rushed through it because it’s blank on line 27a or it was updated after I filed? I didn’t check where it says “Check if you were born after 1/1/1998 or before 1/2/2004.”

I also checked if I was eligible using the EIC calculator and I’m eligible.

@Ak1234 - I appreciate that response..... now I understand why the IRS is sending out the letters.

There was a special rule in 2021 that those under 25 (and at least 18) were eligible. under certain circumstances.  In prior years (and again in 2022 unless Congress passes a law), you had to be 25 years old to be eligible for EITC.

I am having the same problem. I definitely qualify for the EIC. My AGI is low enough, and I have five dependents. I am using the desktop version of TurboTax 2022.

Earned Income Credit—-the rules are back to the “old” rules—

Those under 25 and over 65 without children are not eligible as they were uniquely in 2021.   And you cannot use your income from any earlier tax year to get the EIC for a 2022 return.  There is no “lookback” for 2022.  EIC for 2022 will be based on the income you earned by working in 2022.

RE: "Those under 25 and over 65 without children are not eligible as they were uniquely in 2021." I have children.

RE: "And you cannot use your income from any earlier tax year to get the EIC for a 2022 return.  There is no “lookback” for 2022.  EIC for 2022 will be based on the income you earned by working in 2022." I am looking at my 2022 AGI.

Yes, on line 27, Earned Income Credit line says "No" and has nothing. I should have something. I meet all the qualifications. The IRS website EITC calculator confirms it.

Why did TurboTax say I didn’t qualify for the EIC when I meet all of the qualifications?

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2022 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

And....what is your filing status?  If you are filing married filing separately you cannot get EIC.

Why did TurboTax say I didn’t qualify for the EIC when I meet all of the qualifications?

I had the same problem on my last year tax return. TurboTax did not account for my EITC saying I did not qualify yet I met all the requirements. After filing the TurboTax return IRS sent me a letter that I do qualify and had to file an amended return which I am waiting already 25 weeks to process. Result TurboTax screwed me over by 5K that now I am waiting already half a year to get back from IRS. Will not using TurboTax next year because it is still not counting my EITC for next year yet nothing has changed from last year. There is some software error in TurboTax and not counting EITC when one is eligible.

The same happened to me and not I am waiting for IRS to issue the refund already 25 weeks. TurboTax has some kind of software error because it is not applying it even if one is eligible.
