I had my daughter in 2023. I updated my w-4 in late 2023/ early 2024 to put that I have 2 dependents. I kept everything else the same, married, filing jointly, spouse has a job, and 2 dependents (my kids). For some reason my federal taxes stayed withheld was lower by about $2000. Roughly they held $2700 in 2023, but last year they only held $570. Is this normal? I called my HR to confirm my w-4 is correct and they confirmed it is correct. My Medicaid and SSN taxes stayed roughly the same. Just federal taxes lowered. Is this normal? Is there something I’m missing? Or should I expect to pay that difference when I file in a week or so?

Q. For some reason my federal taxes stayed withheld was lower by about $2000. Is this normal?
A. Yes. The Child Tax Credit for each child is worth up to $2000.
Q. My Medicaid and SS (FICA) taxes stayed roughly the same.
A. FICA is a fixed percentage and not affected by the number of dependents or anything else (other than income top limit).
Q. Or should I expect to pay that difference when I file in a week or so?
A. No. They got it right.
I know the tax credit is $2000. But is it normal for my taxes taken out of my check to be lowered? I figured it would be given back with my tax return. Is that wrong? Or do they normally leave more in your check the more dependents you have?
Q. But is it normal for my taxes taken out of my check to be lowered?
A. Yes. That's what you asked them to do when you filled out a new W-4. adding a child dependent.
Q. I figured it would be given back with my tax return. Is that wrong?
A. No. It's a choice you get to make. You, apparently unknowingly, made the choice to have you withholding reduced so there would be more in your tax home pay.
Q. Or do they normally leave more in your check the more dependents you have?
A. Yes. If you claim all your dependents, on your W-4 form, there will be more in your check (and less in your tax refund).
