A. Yes. That's what you asked them to do when you filled out a new W-4. adding a child dependent.
Q. I figured it would be given back with my tax return. Is that wrong?
A. No. It's a choice you get to make. You, apparently unknowingly, made the choice to have you withholding reduced so there would be more in your tax home pay.
Q. Or do they normally leave more in your check the more dependents you have?
A. Yes. If you claim all your dependents, on your W-4 form, there will be more in your check (and less in your tax refund).
