Because the Federal and California extended filing deadlines are available only for individuals living in areas impacted by official disaster declarations, the deadlines themselves aren't updated in the software.

The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Therefore, taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief. However, if an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date falling within the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.

See this IRS webpage for more information.

See this webpage for more information from the California Franchise Tax Board.

If you have taxes due with your return, and a penalty for underpayment of estimated taxes is calculated by TurboTax, it will ask whether you are covered by a disaster declaration and can request a waiver of the penalty.

So what you're saying is the TurboTax Coders are lazy as this would be a fairly simple thing to put into the code as the filer's address is an input item in the very first pages of the software and could then be simply parsed to determine the appropriate filing deadline.

New dates just provided of 11/15/2023. This affects 98% of California tax payers. Without your providing an update, we can't efile. Please solve.

E-filing closed as of 10/16/2023.  The tax returns can only be printed and mailed.

If you started your 2022 return with Turbo Tax you have until Oct 31, 2023 at 9pm PST to file your return online.

@olenilsen   TT uses the same infrastructure (think servers, middleware, API that you use for the online version of the software) for all tax years, but only one year can be used at a time.

So regardless of the extension provided by the IRS for CA residents, TT has to begin re-tooling the website for the 2023 tax season.  It needs from now until it launches in late November (figure 6 weeks) to do all the updates, testing, etc.

TT made a business decision that the deadline is the deadline because of their business needs.  Customers can use the desktop version (which I think is cheaper than the online version) to complete their 2022 tax return.  And then mail the tax return.

Also, while there is an extended deadline for CA, the deadline for claiming a refund is not until 2026!  There is no penalty, no interest and no 2023 deadline if that is the case!!! So it's more customers impacted by TT's business decision than just CA customers.

This is just the way TT has chosen to run their business.  You might try a competitor and see if they accomodate efiling until a later date.  Professional tax preparers can certainly efile for 2022 (and 2021 and 2020) if you want to go that route.
