Which line do I find to enter the car registration fees? Is it where it says license or prop. Tax? Total? Or total property tax?

You are posting your question from a version of the online software that will be free if you prepare a very simple return.  If you start trying to enter itemized deductions like car registration fees, you will trigger an upgrade to a paid version of the software.    Unless you have enough other itemized deductions to enter like mortgage interest and property tax you paid for a home, you do not want to trigger that upgrade.   Car registration has no effect at all unless you have a lot of other itemized deductions.

You would enter this:

  1.  Log into Turbo Tax
  2. Go to federal>deductions and Credits
  3. Cars and Other Things You Own>Car Registration Fees

As xmasbaby0 mentions above, if you enter this expense, Turbo Tax will prompt you to pay for an upgrade.  Unless you have other Itemized Expenses that exceed your Standard Deduction, it would be to your best interest not to report this if you wish to remain in a Free version of Turbo Tax.

For tax year 2023, the Standard Deduction Rates are;

  • Single - $13,850 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $13,850 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $27,700 add $1,500 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $20,800 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
  • For Blind, add $1850  except for Married Filing Jointly then it is $1500 per person

Itemized Deductions that might exceed your Standard Deduction Rate include Large medical Expenses that are in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted Gross income for the Year, Large Charitable Contributions that require documentation, Mortgage payments or insurance or other expenses that are listed in this link.

If all you have is Car Registration Fees, don't report it because it will not impact your tax return and you may end up paying for a service you don't need.
