Third Economic Impact Payment

My 47 year old son's only income is Social Security Disability of $18,000. He did receive $1,400 third impact payment. The turbotax calculator is showing $1,400 tax due. I believe this is incorrect.

Sorry I misspoke - “he” received the 1400. He is a single taxpayer and takes the standard deduction. He is not claimed on anyone else’s tax return.

Did you enter twice that he received the $1,400?  You may want to use clear and start over by clicking Tax Tools>>Clear and Start over.

If your sons only income is social security, then he should not owe anything.

If your son's only income is Social Security then he is not required to file a tax return unless he has a 1095A for health insurance from the marketplace.   If he already received the $1400 stimulus then he cannot get it again on a 2021 tax return.

I like to file even though it is not required just to document his financial situation. I have been able to use TurboTax to accurately do so in the past. The program should not indicate that taxes are due when they are not. Others might follow the TurboTax result and be asked to refund the payment - incorrectly.

@N140ora The questions about the recovery rebate credit are in Federal Review.  If the questions do not appear for you then either you said you can be claimed as someone else's dependent or your income it too high and you are not eligible.
