My boyfriend owes $3000 in back child support, he was going to claim our kids this year and we know child support will take the money out of the tax return but will they only take what's owed and he get the difference If there is any left over or will they take whole refund even if his return is more than what he owes.

They will automatically take what is owed out of his refund, any remaining refund will be sent to him, sometimes there can be a delay receiving the remaining amount by a day or two.

So I recently filed a joint tax return and owe 3000$ in child support, but my refund amount is well over the amount due to DCSE. I check the IRS website to see what the adjusted amount was due to me after the offset and the amount said 0.00. Have anyone experienced this?

Did you still get the remaining even if this balance says 0?

The IRS may have sent the amount to the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) and they will adjust for the debt and send you the remaining refund.

You may call (800) 304-3107 or click the link below to find out how much of an offset is connected to your refund.

Due to Covid, everything seems to be taking longer than usual.  If you refund is still processing you will just need to be patient.

The online link is your best option to track your refund.  I have attached a link with more answers from the IRS as to why your refund may be taking longer to process.

There is a delay in processing the returns at the IRS due to Covid-19 and social distancing policies in effect.
