We made changes to your tax return that changed the amount of your refund. You will receive a notice that explains the changes we made to your tax return. You should receive your notice and the balance of your refund.
We changed the amount claimed as Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. The error was in one or more of the following: The Social Security number of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent was missing or incomplete. The last name of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent does not match our records. One or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit.
what happened??

Wait for the notice instead of just looking at the generic message on the IRS site : https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-letters-explain-why-some-2020-recovery-rebate-credits-are-different...
I got my letter. Says a social security number was entered wrong. What are the next steps??
You’ll need to follow the directions in the letter you received to dispute the adjustment. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly, and be aware of whatever time-frame is noted for contesting the decision.
You should try calling the phone number on the letter, but be aware that there may be a significant wait time, if you get through, at all. You can also respond by mail.
See TurboTax Help article I got a letter or notice from the IRS for help in understanding the notice you received. If you don't see your notice listed there, go to the IRS Notice or Letter page for more help.
Was not able to get through by phone. Says they are too overwhelmed to handle the call? What else can I do? Does having turbotax pro help me out any?
Sorry but the IRS will talk to only the taxpayer listed on the return ... try at 7am when the lines first open.
You said they reported an incorrect SS# ??? If you efiled the return would have been rejected right away. So did you mail in the return ? What exactly does the IRS notice say ? What is the letter/number of the notice in the upper right hand corner of the first page? And what tax year is this for ?

Unfortunately, you are going to have to wait until the IRS has caught up with their backlog and is able to take your call, OR you can dispute their decision by mail.
TurboTax has no ability to resolve this issue with the IRS. The IRS processed your return and think you made an error that changed your taxes.
As @JohnW152 states - "You’ll need to follow the directions in the letter you received to dispute the adjustment. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly, and be aware of whatever time-frame is noted for contesting the decision"
it actually says that SS # of an individual claimed as a dependent could be wrong. I downloaded my return and it is actually correct. I e-filed.
notice cp-12
Those are generic reasons why they adjusted the Recovery Rebate Credit on your return.
A common adjustment is if you claimed the Recovery rebate credit on 1040 line 30 when you already got the Stimulus payment or got the second one after you filed or reported the wrong amounts or entered the wrong amounts in the 2 boxes. If you entered the total you got for both rounds in the same box it would think you didn't get the other one. The IRS knows how much they sent to you and will take it off your refund (or send you a bill) if you try to claim it again.
So how much is on line 30? Did you already get the full Stimulus for 2020? Should you have an amount on line 30 to claim any missing Stimulus #1 or #2? When did you file? If you filed before Feb 12 there may have been a glitch in Turbo Tax that put a wrong amount on line 30.
