Hi, my 2025 taxes were done except for a K-1 from my wife's uncle's estate (he passed in 2023 and his estate was settled and distributed in 2024). We received this K-1 three weeks ago. This has added @ $38K to my federal tax owed as the distrubtion check we received was for capital gains that were earned from the time of death to final dissemination of the estate.
I am trying to request a payment plan from the IRS to spread this out over 180 days. The IRS site informs me that my e-filed TurboTax return (filed April 2) has not been processed yet and consequently, cannot set up a payment plan.
Does anyone know of what options I have? Can I just split the amount due into six equal payments as if I had. a 180 day payment plan in place?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Charlie

Yes, you can do that. However you can complete a Form 9465 yourself and send it in with your first payment. It is a signature document so it doesn't have to be filed with your tax return. There is a fee, and it's not clear if the fee would not come into play if you make the payments, however it would stop any type of IRS action to collect. You can set the payment amounts and I would suggest a lower amount because you can always add more. You can pay off early, but don't miss a payment.
The IRS wants the payments to be completed by next tax season so based on your information you will be fine.
