I could not find my exemption deduction of 8100 for my wife and I, both over 65.

Item 38 of my 1040 should be less than  155000.  Therefore where is my exemption deduction for my wife and I, both over 65?? ($8100.00)

The exemption deduction will be on line 42 of the 1040 form. Therefore, your adjusted gross income on line 38 will not be reduced yet by your deductions (standard or itemized) or the exemptions.  On line 42 of the 1040 form, you should see a deduction of  $8,100 for the two of you.

A screenshot of Form 1040 line 42 is attached.

My 1040-SR form does not have a line 42.  Where else to look?

What are you looking for?  There is no more personal exemptions.  This is a new forum layout. Some posts that have June 2019 dates are really older posts from the old forum that got moved over. So they might be for prior years and not current info. When they migrated over the dates got changed to June 2019. And the screen shots got deleted.

This help screen is absolutely useless!

Starting last year for 2018 returns there is no more personal exemptions.  Instead the increased the Standard Deduction almost double.

For 2019 the standard deduction amounts on 1040 line 9 are:

Single 12,200 + 1,650 for 65 and over or blind

HOH 18,350 + 1,650 for 65 and over or blind

Joint 24,400+ 1,300 for each 65 and over or blind

Married filing Separate 12,200 + 1,300 for 65 and over or blind

There are no personal exemptions on a 2019 Form 1040 nor were there any personal exemptions on a 2018 Form 1040.

If you are age 65 or older then you receive an additional amount added to your Standard Deduction.  The Standard Deduction is on the 2019 Form 1040 Line 9

Standard deductions for 2019

  • Single - $12,200 add $1,650 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $12,200 add $1,300 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $24,400 add $1,300 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $18,350 add $1,650 if age 65 or older
