How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

Yes.  There is a problem with the Contributions section of the Itemized deductions and also the above the line $300.00 deduction.  Because of the many changes due to the CARES Act, IRS is still developing the forms and publications on this issue.  Last update was January 13th where everything is still in draft.  Once IRS finalizes the forms, we will be able to update TurboTax to accurately reflect your Contributions deduction

How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

I closed out of the program and went back to review my Deductions and selected Charitable deductions.

I use Turbo Tax to file both federal and state returns.  It looks like (as far as I can tell) it had seen that I gave $10 last year on my state return to one of the charities that NC allows you to donate part of your refund too.  Apparently it wanted me to enter $10.00 under Charity based on last years NC tax return data it had.  Once I did that, it accepted my federal return and let me file.

Check last years Turbo Tax filing (if you used it last year).  See if you donated any portion of your state refund to any charitable groups,  If you did, try entering that number in there.

This guy figured it out.

Thanks for your response but wrong answer. TurboTax Tech had me copy the number from below the wording for entry 10a. In my case it was $4 ito the box they were asking to provide the corrected value. Problem solved."

This worked for me. My value was 2.

How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

After talking to THREE TurboTax specialists, the fourth one was able to figure it out for me. I had both monetary and goods as charitable donations. I had $150 worth of monetary donations and $50 worth of goods donated to charity, so the total charitable contributions were $200. I tried $200 and $200.00 and I still got the dreaded "unacceptable value" box. I also tried 0, 0.00, $140, $300, $50, whatever numerical value I was feeling and nothing worked!

The solution that FINALLY worked for me was just entering my monetary donation amount, or $150.  So just add your monetary donations and disregard anything else!

How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

@MaryM428  - When I go to FEDERAL TAXES, Deductions & Credits, Charitable Donations, I can see the $300 of donations I made and entered into TT.  However, when I view my 1040, it says $0 in Lines 10a, b, and c.  How can I get my $300 to appear on my 1040?  We are taking the standard deduction.

@0scarMayerWeiner - How do you get back to that box once you've moved on from it?  I wiped everything out of there, and now none of my contributions are populating on my 1040.

How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

If you are claiming a standard deduction, follow these steps to claim your $300 charitable donation.

  1. After logging into Turbo Tax, go to federal>deductions and credits>
  2. When you arrive at the summary page that summarizes your transactions, scroll to the bottom of the page and select wrap up tax breaks.
  3. Continue to scroll or answer questions until you reach a screen that says Based on what you just told us, the Standard Deduction is best for you press continue at the bottom of the page.
  4. Then you will reach a screen that says Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act.  Here you can record an amount up to $300.

If you have entered charitable donations under deductions and credits, remove those if they are not already removed or else you will receive error messages when you file your return.

This worked for me! Thank you!!! 😄

As someone mentioned above, you will run into this problem when your itemized and standard deductions are within a $300 range of each other.

In my case, the program picked "itemized deductions" for me after running through the charitable donations section. However, the standard deduction + $300 gave me a better tax break. The program was "confused" because it picked both standard & itemized deductions depending on where you were in the program.

The solution for me was to just go back and eliminate all the charitable donations to force the program to pick the standard deduction + $300 in all sections. The error stopped appearing because the $300 was supposed to appear in line 10b.

I figured it out!  Some of us donated to different donations when we filed taxes last year.  Examples are Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia Fund, California Breast Cancer Research Fund, California Firefighters'...

I had $13 so I have to input $13 and it worked.  The number you need to input shows on that same page if you are a returning TurboTax User.

It's kind of important that you test software prior to letting people do their taxes with it.

How do I fix my charitable contributions? It says I have an unacceptable value.

I finaly found the solution. No matter what number you put in, either 300, 100 or even 0, It won't fix the error at all. Its actually not the number issue. The software is actually taking extra deduction at the end without telling you. So this double Charity dection is the problem. I used the CD version which is installed on my pc. But it should also work if you are using the website.

Solution: Go to "Deductible and Credits Section". Than browse down and go to "Charitable Donation" section. Now you need to delete all your charity info. I mean don't change the numbers to 0. I mean click on "X" and delete everything, as you made no charity Donation at all. Delete the amount  you paid, delete the Name of charity you typed. Click Done. Make it blank as you never entered anything. Than keep going through that section

Now still stay on the section. Meaning just keep clicking next and next, anwering other question,, so keep clicking next and next. Now Right at the last page of section,  You will get asked AGAIN for your Charity amount. I know its weired, out of nowhere but Last question is again for Charity. This question only ask you to put an amount for your charity, it doesn't ask you for for the name of charity or how you paid, ONLY the amount.  Here you can put any amount of $300 or under. and BOOM now ther error won't pop up ever.

Same thing.  How is this not an easy fix?  ITs the weekend before extended tax day and I have the same problems.  I have spent way too much time attempting to solve my issue, which precludes me from easily filing by e-file.  ANd this is not because I did anything wrong, its because your software is innadequate to let me list small contributions pursuant to the CARES Act?
