You cannot take a federal deduction for mileage as an employee.  Mileage deductions are only available for self-employed individuals not employees.  Also, commuting miles are never deductible.  Driving to and from work would be commuting and not deductible whether employee or self-employed.

Since they are commuting miles, they are not likely to be deductible by your state either, however, state laws all vary.  Which state do you live in?

Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

If you live in a state that lets you deduct job-related expenses, the information will flow from your federal return  to the state return, so enter it in Federal>Deductions and Credits>Employment Expenses>Job-Related Expenses

And....it seems like you are asking about mileage to and from work---commuting.  Commuting to and from work has never been deductible.

No, NC follows federal guidelines for itemized deductions.  Since your miles are employee miles and commuting miles they are not deductible on either your state or your federal return.
