That depends. How old is the "adult" child, and how much income did they receive? Was the adult child a full-time student under the age of 24? If they were older than 23 and had more than $4700 of income, they cannot be claimed as a anyone else's dependent, no matter how much food and lodging you paid for.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2023 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
Qualifying relative
