Deceased Taxpayer and Stimulus Payments

My mother passed away Sept 1, 2020. She received the first stimulus check of $1,200. She did not receive the second check of $600 due to her death. When completing taxes, we list the checks accurately and now Turbo tax is calculating a refund. this doesn't seem to be right.

YES!  For deceased individuals see the second question under Eligibility. If they died in 2020 they still get it.

Click on the magnifying glass and type stimulus in the search box.   Hit the enter key and you should get a Jump to link

In TurboTax Online, you are prompted to input stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2 information under Review down the left hand side of the screen.  You can also access your stimulus check choices by following these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Other Tax Situations.
  • At the screen Let’s keep going to wrap up.  Click on Let’s keep going.
  • At the screen Let’s make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  • At the screen Did you get a stimulus payment? you can update your stimulus check entries.

TurboTax will compare your two payment amounts to the computation within TurboTax.  The computations within TurboTax are based upon the information that has been entered into the tax software.  If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Rebate Recovery Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.

If you have not received one or both of your stimulus checks, you will receive your payment in the form of a Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of your 2020 Federal tax return when you file.

he died in July 2020.  He was eligible for the first check which he received.  He was not eligible for the second check and he did not receive it.  on the page about how much you received I put in the first $1200 but $0 for the second check.  so then the program gives him a $600 credit on his taxes (which becomes a refund for money he did not and should not receive).

he gets the second check even though he was deceased?

Deceased Taxpayer and Stimulus Payments

YES ... a decedent is eligible if they were alive for one minute of 2020 which is why the program is giving it on the final return.
