Hey everyone!! Part of my employer's benefits package includes the ability to choose a Health Insurance Plan with an HSA, since all plans my employer offers are High-Deductible plans. I chose to do this. I do not add any funds into the HSA myself. Instead, from my employer's Benefits webpage, I can choose how much I want taken from my paycheck to go into that HSA every two weeks (my employer does not match or add anything else into this HSA, besides what I choose to deduct from my paycheck to have it go there.) And yes, I have also used that HSA during the calendar year to pay for qualified medical expenses.
My question being since my employer manages this, my W2 does have box 12b (Code W) filled in with an amount. I didn't know what this was so I searched online and it said that this box would only be filled in if you added funds to an employer-sponsored HSA. Since that box is already filled in on my W2, and I didn't add any funds from my personal bank account or any other sources, would I be able to use Turbo Tax's Free Edition to file my taxes? I assume since the amount is listed on my W2 and didn't add any funds from other sources, I do not need to add the separate HSA Tax Documents, and mine would qualify as a "Simple Return" since all I need is the W2 to file (I do not own property, in college, or have anything else that would be considered "complicated" or that would require another tax form.) Or... am I incorrect in this assumption and regardless of how my HSA is setup, just having one would require me to purchase Turbo Tax Deluxe in order to file?
Thanks for your help everyone!! 🙂

If there are any contributions to your HSA (whether from your employer or from you or from any eligible person on the planet) or if there are any distributions from your HSA, then your return is required by the IRS to have form 8889 attached.
Form 8889 is what makes your return not a "simple" return. Therefore, you cannot use the Basic product to file your return, but must upgrade to at least Deluxe.
Please look at this webpage to see what forms are supported in which Online products.
