2021 Form 1116 Schedule B (carryovers) can't efile

For the record, I e-filed my return with turbotax online without problems today. My return was with Form 1116 Schedule B, but the credit/deduction/credit trick was not necessary anymore.

I too was able to federal file successfully today 3/22/22. The federal accepted within a half hour.  I used Premier CD.  I believe it is safe to file now.

I had the most difficult and frustrating time filing my federal taxes this year.  Although part of the problem is due to the IRS requiring Form 1116/Sch B so late in the year, TT did a horrible job communicating to us. TT has no excuse to have customers getting cell errors with no explanation, forms getting rejected by the IRS because of the carryover with no help TT support,  and changing available dates 3 times without communicating why. Special thanks to @LarryDean and others for helping us solve the issues and avoiding others.

I couldn’t agree more. TT communicated better towards the end of this fiasco than at the beginning; however, overall they still get an F. Also, getting different answers from different customer service reps compounded the issues. TT obviously has an internal communication problem as well. Thanks to the community, we were able to get through this.

Now that we-all have spent hours wrestling with TurboTax, here's how it should be done. I do my sister's taxes for Canada. Through the Canadian version of TurboTax I logged onto the Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) and downloaded the multitude of tax forms into all the correct forms in TT. The tax info is put out there by the various banks and investment companies she uses into CRA and TT then finds it and downloads it. One minute. The rest of the return took 20 minutes. Done. Filed. Little manual input, no TT having to log into each investment company's websites like we do here.

Sorry, a bit off topic but apparently there are easier ways to file taxes. I was as frustrated as you were with the Schedule B thing but this forum helped me get past it.

No worries, off-topic helps us realize how poor the situation is here, in the US for us TT users.

Two things here:
One, I encourage everyone to apply for a refund.  Clearly, TT didn't give us what we bought and paid for.  Hitting them financially, might make them more aware?  Don't forget to add in the $25 State filing fee?
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/how-do-i-request-a-refund-for-my-turbotax-product/...

Two:  Upon filing for a refund, it has a form to fill out, then gives a Case number, AND says the Case Number will be emailed to you.  Nope, no email.... good thing I saved it.

And through all of this, I'm amazed their stock continues to climb, INTU, now $477!

Update:  I am still unable to find out why me e-file is rejected by the IRS (twice).  TT tech support is TOTALLY USELESS.  They are clueless and waste my time with nonsense.  I have spent over 10 hours talking to 9 different people at TT on 4 days over the past two weeks.

Here is my situation.  I use TT Delux, downloaded version on Windows 11.  I e-filed my return after I ran the final review, and TT said my return had no error (see attachment).  My e-file succeeded, but the IRS rejected my return.  I received an email from TT reporting the rejection (see attachment).

The TT email clearly says: "There is a potential issue with the calculation of the carryover of foreign taxes." and mentions Form 1116 Carryover Foreign Taxes.  I waited for the latest update of TT (March 12) before e-filing, and did not change or override any field value, form, or number, nor did I  enter anything manually.  All carryover and calculations were done automatically by TT.  So, (1) there is definitely a problem with the way TT does the carryover calculation!

The same TT email clearly says that I must go to and click on the "Check E-file status" button to see what is the issue that the IRS has with my e-filed return.  But when I go to check the status, TT claims that I have not yet e-filed my return! (See the attachment.) Thus, (2) there is definitely a bug in the TT program that makes it think that I have not e-filed my return!

The 7th tech support guy I talked to was finally convinced that there is a bug in TT program and took my information and promised that he was going to escalate the issue and a software technician will contact me within 24 hours.  Then, 48 hours later, no one had contacted me yet, and I called TT tech support again.  Another hour of wasted discussion with another clueless person, and he ended up transferring me to someone else.

This 9th person I talked to deserves a prize!   She refused to accept that there is anything wrong with TT.  Her explanation was that the program sometimes does not know that it has e-filed.  This genius even lacks the intellectual ability to understand that what she described is the very definition of a bug!  Regarding the issue with the carryover calculation, this genius says,again, there is nothing wrong with the TT program, because TT has sent me this email that says the IRS has rejected my return; she says I must now contact the IRS to find what they object to, and then change the numbers and calculations of the carryover in my return to resolve the issue.  When I reminded her that all these numbers were automatically carried over by TT 2021 from my last year's return, which I e-filed by TT and was accepted by the IRS, she said that then my last year's numbers must have been wrong and I should change those too!

It is pointless to talk to TT tech support.  I have appealed on this forum to some Experts, but I have not yet heard anything back.  I am totally stuck now.  To say that I am frustrated with TT is quite an understatement.

Can any one of the Experts or TT employees on this forum help?  Perhaps just escalate this case so some software person takes a look?

My advice is to read up a few posts to see what worked for others then 1. Make sure you have the March 18th update, do the switch from credit --> deduction --> credit and walk through the questions again then try to efile.  Sorry don't have better but these steps have worked for most.

2021 Form 1116 Schedule B (carryovers) can't efile

I did exactly that, and I am still getting the failure message about the missing Form 1116/Schedule B when trying to file. Perhaps it is because I am using TurboTax Home & Business, but definitely the latest version. Are the product variations updated on separate schedules?

Also, I called customer service yesterday and was told that the problem was known and that the target date for a fix was 3/31.

I have turbotax premier desktop version and didn't update it until Sunday March 20th (not sure if there was a fix on the 19th), but my fed N state was accepted with the form 1116 schedule b and put in my agi (not the 0 that people spoke earlier)

If we download the latest update from TurboTax (Windows version), do we still need to change from credit to deduction, then back to credit to be able to e-file successfully ?

@faujong

See if you still have the error... If you do, then change to deductions and then back again. Good luck!

If there is an error, it is when you e-File, it will reject the e-File ?

@faujong

If you have any red exclamation points in the forms, you will not be able to file. If you are all clear after the review, it should work.
