If I did a lease buyout for my car, do I claim this?

I purchased my leased car last year in the state of Washington and paid state taxes. Do I need to claim this or receive paperwork for it?

Yes, you can enter the sales tax paid in association with the purchased of the vehicle after your lease ended.

Per the State of Washington:

  • Washington State residents may deduct state and local general-sales tax on their federal income returns.
  • The deduction is available to taxpayers that itemize deductions, not those who take the standard deduction. The deduction is based on adjusted gross income and number of exemptions claimed. Taxpayers who keep all their receipts can deduct actual sales tax and use tax paid.
