I live in iowa. bought car 2018. paid over 700 for new registration. it looks like i can claim this because its based on the value of my new vehicle. IS THIS TRUE?

Yes.

You can deduct car registration fees if they are assessed annually and based on the value of your vehicle. While you new car may have a higher registration fee this year because it was new, you will stay pay another registration fee next year. 

You can also claim the sales tax you paid as a deduction.
