I bought a car in Missouri. I had to pay Illinois sales tax when I registered in Illinois. How can I get out of paying it again now that I'm filing?

Why do you think you have to pay sales tax again?

It depends, but you likely don't need to report anything.  Usually, a sales tax charge for an out-of-state purchase will not be included on your return when you did pay sales tax.  If you live in Illinois, you paid sales tax when you registered the car in Illinois.  You do not need to report the amount on the tax return, or you will be taxed again, and you shouldn't be.

That line is for something like an internet purchase where no sales tax is charged.  Those purchases do need to be reported and taxed, because you have not paid Illinois state tax on them.

Feel free to comment if you are not an Illinois resident, and I'll give follow-up information.
