How can I remove the Elderly and Disabled Credit on Desktop Deluxe 2024?

Taxpayer is a dual citizen, so ineligible for this credit in 2024. I saw some old solutions in the community about tax tools/delete a form, but can't follow them in my version for this return.

To remove information related to the Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled in Deluxe:

  1. Select FEDERAL TAXES
  2. Select Deductions & Credits
  3. On the How do you want to enter your deductions and credits? page, select I'll choose what I work on
  4. On the Your 2024 Deductions and Credits page, scroll down and select Start or Revisit next to Elderly or Disabled Credit, below Other Deductions and Credits
  5. On the  Did you retire because of a disability? page, select No, then Continue.  Don't worry, you're not perjuring yourself by making this statement.  The IRS doesn't see this response -- your answer merely disqualifies you for the credit within the TurboTax program.

How can I remove the Elderly and Disabled Credit on Desktop Deluxe 2024?

The individual is over 65, so the disability option apparently doesn't come up. (I can't trick the tool into removing the credit, it just tells me the "good news", etc. )  Is there any other way I can trick it into removing that schedule or deleting the credit?  I'd prefer not to do a "pen and ink" return, but I guess that is an option. It needs to be paper filed anyway. What do you think?

Thanks so much!

You can delete the Schedule R to remove the credit.    How to delete forms in TurboTax Desktop (your version).     When you click on Update next to the credit, what screens/questions are you presented with?

I followed the instructions you referenced, but the tool does not delete Schedule R. (It actually pops up a little message that says "this form cannot be deleted.")  Re your question about what happens when I hit "update", first I get a screen that says "let's see if we can get" you more money, with an option to continue. Then it asks for any non-taxable retirement income (there is none in this case), and when I hit continue, it simply tells me the return already includes the credit. There is no option to refuse it.

I did play with the DOB to force the age down below 65, and the credit drops off. Since this is a paper file, I think this may allow me to at least create a printable 1040. Any other solutions or any cautions for me?

Dropping the age will drop your standard deduction. Since the nontaxable income is just the program trying to calculate a credit, you are better off to put a number there that drops the credit rather than changing your age. Since you are mailing the return, be sure to have it tracked to ensure the safety of your information.

If you are itemizing deductions, the age will not matter.

If you are taking the standard deduction - Increased standard deduction amounts for taxpayers who are 65 and older or

blind are:

• $1,950 for Single or Head of Household

• $1,550 for married taxpayers or Qualifying Surviving Spouse
