E-file auto rejected, can't figure out why...

It says that there's something wrong with form Schedule 8812.

Specifically, "There is invalid information entered on Schedule 8812...

Review entries in Part I-B, Part I-C, and Part II-A. Clear entries that do not apply. If you have overridden any fields, please be sure to remove the overrides .

Walk your tax return through the interview again."

Those parts are supposed to be empty though because of my choices above them in Part I-A. As soon as I submit it's rejected with that error. Any Ideas?

Since we can't see your tax return in this forum, you could Delete Form 8812 from your return, then go back through the the My Info section to be sure your children are entered correctly there (SSNs and birthdates, etc.).

If so, then go through the Child Tax Credit section from beginning to end, paying close attention to your entries.

Are you required to file Form 8862 for the Earned Income Credit?  If so, you need this for the Child Tax Credit also.

Did you intend to apply for the Child or Dependent Tax Credit?

If not, you can delete the form.

If you did, then first, be sure you did not enter any overrides onto the 8812 Form.  You would have done this in the FORMS mode.

  1. Go back to Step by Step.
  2. Personal
  3. Deductions & Credits
  4. I'll choose what I work on
  5. Scroll to You and Your Family
  6. Select Child and Dependent Care Credit
  7. Go through the interview with attention to detail

Actually I'm not sure? I was sent a letter 6419 and was told to add it. I didn't override anything as I don't use form view.

I was given ctc for 2 kids last year for 6 months. I added that and keep getting that error

Thanks a lot for responding btw

Assuming you and/or your spouse if filing jointly, had a US home for more than 1/2 the year in 2021. Go back through the interview and be sure you have answered that question in the interview.  That determines if just part I-B is filled or Parts I-C and II-A are completed.

If you had a US home then only Part I-B should be completed.  Otherwise the other two parts and not Part 1-B should be completed.

If the error pops again there should be a form view that shows on your screen.  Look over that form view and eliminate the entries in any parts that don't apply.

OK, i looked it over and everything is correct but it still got rejected. I'm scared to try again as it's been rejected twice now. I have no idea what's wrong with it

E-file auto rejected, can't figure out why...

To JohnB5677,

I have the exact same message as Link1227, regarding e-file rejection and Sch. 8812.  I do have 2 dependent children (over age 18) but I did not pay for any "child or dependent care" in 2021.

Do I even file 8812 or what?????

I'm going crazy!!!

Thank you.

I finally got it to go through.

First, you only file the 8812 if you have received the letter 6419 and/or a child tax credit last year.

What I end up doing to fix was going to forms view and deleting the 8812 with the "delete form" button.

Then I went back to step by step view, and went to my dependents, and put it order of the youngest to oldest. (no idea if it helped, but someone else told me to try it.)

Then I went back to the dependents section, and added in the ctc amount again and it worked.

No idea why

E-file auto rejected, can't figure out why...

I just had this same issue with two previous attempts at filing rejected within minutes with the third one pending.  Certainly this is quite disconcerting, one observation that might be helpful to others.  After I deleted form 8812 and recreated it I noticed differences between the earlier 8812 and later 8812.  Specifically, old form 8812 box 4a, 4b, 4c and 6 listed number of dependents with a decimal point after the dependent number (1., 0., 1., and 0.) and after I deleted the form and created the new one dependent number boxes 4a, 4b, 4c and 6 now list dependent number as whole number without decimal point as 1, 0, 1 and 0) since my return is still pending rather than auto-rejected I can only guess that the addition of the decimal point in the number of dependents section was the reason for the rejection.  Hopefully deleting the form and redoing it will solve this for others and I hope this will also work for me!

Just following up, return accepted!  Deleting the form and recreating it is the fix!
