Be aware that this will only affect you if you itemize your deductions. Also, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act implemented a $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions to $10,000 for Married Filing Jointly.
The standard deductions for 2022 are:
Single; Married Filing Separately - $12,950
Married Filing Jointly; Qualifying Widow(er) - $25,900
Head of Household - $19,400
To make a difference, you would have to have itemized deductions greater than the standard deduction for the tax to count.
You may benefit from itemizing your deductions on Schedule A if you:
- Do not qualify for the standard deduction, or the amount you can claim is limited,
- Had large out-of-pocket medical and dental expenses during the year,
- Paid interest and taxes on your home,
- Made contributions to qualified charities, or
- Have total itemized deductions that are more than the standard deduction to which you otherwise are entitled.
