Turbo Tax 2019 seems to properly calculate with the "Energy-Efficient Charging Station". However, wasn't this retroactively covering 2018 installs as well? Should a 2018 install be claimed on the 2019 tax return (in which case shouldn't the question ask if it was installed prior to 2020 rather than in 2019?) ...or does one need to amend their previously filed 2018 return? If one needs to amend their 2018 return to get this retroactive credit, Turbo Tax 2018 doesn't seem to properly apply the credit (and there is no AMT for the return). Has anyone successfully been able to get a credit for a 2018 charging station install using Turbo Tax?
We have not yet made updates to the 2018 amendment software for the retroactive tax extenders. Once we have finalized all of the changes to the 2019 software, we will work on updating the 2018 amendment software for the tax extenders.
At this time, I do not have an estimated date for release.
Hello - I was wondering if there was an update to this, and an idea of when the changes will be made? Thank you!

For the 2018 software? If so, see this TurboTax support FAQ - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/2018-extenders-passed-under-taxpayer-certainty-and...
Thanks! So it looks like mid May is when it will be updated.
It's updated!
But is it working? I just tried to enter mine and it doesn't give me any change in my taxes? I had a carryforward from 2018 to 2019, after buying an EV and installing solar panels, even before the EV station was entered, but now when I enter the charging station, it tells me I'm losing all of the credit. I went back and deleted my solar, to see if maybe it was the order of the entry that affected it, but same result, when I then have the charging station entered it at first gives me credit for that but then decreased the solar panels credit, so overall, with this added expense of the charging station, I end up with the same carryfoward?
Can someone take another look at how this 2018 form 8911 is functioning in TT 2018? I'm having the same problem as others- I enter my EV charging station expense and it shows no credit for it. However, it's not due to any of the issues mentioned already, like AMT or tentative tax, I've checked those out. BUT I also installed solar panels the same year, and THOSE credits will carry forward, while the EV charging station credit will not. I also bought my EV the same year as well. So it seems that TT is adding in first my $7500 credit for the EV, then $378 left from my solar credit, leaving me with a $1290 carryforward to 2019 from the solar purchase, and then disallowing the EV charging station credit. However, if I completely remove the solar panels from my file, then all of a sudden a credit of $188 shows up for the EV charging station purchase. So while the form 8911 seems to not be integrated into the system, it seems to be putting those credits in in the wrong order. My solar credits should be applied last, since they do carryforward, while the EV purchase credit as well as the EV charging station credit do not carryforward according to IRS instructions.
Could Annette or Susan please take a look at the comment I left about a week ago- I got another email notification from TT saying that TT 2018 had been updated for these energy efficiency issues and it's STILL doing what I described above- not entering EV charging station credits BEFORE solar!! Please help, this is costing me money!!
If you could provide a diagnostic copy of your return then we can examine the situation in more detail.

Sorry to dredge this thread up again... question about the Tax Credit for EV Home Chargers.
Does the Federal Tax Credit cover the purchase of the EV charger AND the installation? Or only the installation?
I purchased the charger myself, and then gave it to the installer to install. It would be nice to know if I can get 30% on both the charger and install.
Thank you for any advice!

See IRS Form 8911, Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (2020 Draft) - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/i8911--dft.pdf
The credit for all property placed in service at your main home is generally the smaller of 30% of the
property’s cost or $1,000.
Hi DoninGA -
Thank you for that excerpt... I really hate to feel a fool, but I do. The language used in tax documents is really Greek to me. I am going to assume since it says "all property placed in service" - that means the charger and the installation are covered by the Tax Credit.... right? 😄

Yes, the charger and the installation would be your cost.
Hello,
I have entered the information in to TurboTax related to a charger that was installed in 2020. However, the software gives me a $0 tax credit. Is there a reason why? Is this credit still applicable to the 2020 tax year?
Thanks for your time in advance.
