Finally got a response from IRS after 13 months and they have updated my new SSN for the 2019 tax return (by Amended return). Even they release my stimulus payment also. Hurry! See my previous posts from May 2, 2020, 1:27 PM & June 21, 2020, 3:50 PM dates for better understanding my situation.
Yes, I got my all stimulus payment now. I submitted my 2019 amended return for the same cause.
Hello do you need to amend the return once IRS makes the change to SSN? Can we go back and reclaim the payment that we are entitled? my wife was on ITIN and just got a SSN in 2021.
In 2020 I used ITIN and in 2021 I used SSN but IRS rejected my return on account of wrong ID. What should I do?
You will need to print and mail your return with a letter explaining you now have a SSN. You will need to include your ITIN on that letter so the IRS can match your old records with your new ones.
Need to correct my ssn
I have similar question. I am non us citizen and 1 child is non us citizen. When filing 2021 taxes we used ITIN for kid and rest of us ( spouse and another child have SSN). due to this Non US child , the stimulus credit is low for me. However the kid got SSN in Nov 2021. Am I eligible to amend 2021 tax return to claim the stimulus rebate?
Thanks in advance
Sorry but no to the CTC, EIC and RRC if the SS# is issued after filing the original return.
A4. Generally, yes. One eligibility requirement for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit is that you must have a valid SSN or claim a dependent who has a valid SSN or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the IRS.
A valid SSN for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit is one that is issued by the Social Security Administration by the due date of your 2021 tax return (including an extension if you requested the extension by the due date).
If you file jointly with your spouse and only one individual has a valid SSN, you can claim up to $1,400 for the spouse who has a valid SSN and up to $1,400 for each qualifying dependent claimed on the tax return.
If neither spouse has a valid SSN, you can claim only up to $1,400 for each qualifying dependent claimed on the tax return.
the rule for the stimulus is that only those family members who have a SSN are eligible for the stimulus. So what should have occured is that Line 28 of your tax return reflected 2 family members with SSN LESS what was received for stimulus last March - May, 2021.
if you submitted your tax return with an ITIN for the Non-US child and the SSN was issued prior to April 17, 2022 (due date of the tax return) or Oct 15, 2022 (if there was an extension request filed), then YES, you can amend.
Also, this should make you eligible for the Child Tax Credit for the non-US child (assuming the child is under 18 years old as of 12/31/21 and you all lived in the US for at least 6 months of 2021).
it needs to be paper filed and that means it'll be a 9-12 month wait, but it should get taken care of.
@Critter-3 and I are saying the same thing (we just came at it from opposite directions) ..... the SSN was issued prior to the due date of the tax return, so the child is elgible for the stimulus; if the SSN was issued after 4/17/22 then the child would not be eligible for the stimulus (or the child tax credit)
Thank you for your responses.
SSN was issued in November 2021. 2021 tax return filed with SSN (filed in Apr 2022) .
2020 tax returns filed with ITIN ( in Apr 2021)
Based on this I cannot amend 2020 returns right.
@devatha correct- you can not amend 2020 tax return
- the SSN was issued in Nov, 2021, which is after the due date of the 2020 tax return (May 15, 2021)
