Amending a return

I've already filed and both federal and state have been accepted. I forgot to add the church donations of $12,080.52 is it worth it to amend for this and if so when should I do this?

Since we don't know whether you took the standard deduction or itemized deductions on your original return it's not possible to answer your question. Add the deduction to your tax return and see what happens to your refund. If it increases then it would be worthwhile to amend your return to add it. You must delete the amount you add after you have seen what it does to your refund. Even if you decide to amend your return, the return as you originally filed it must be used to start your amended return form 1040X.

It may well be worth it. However, you will not be able to Amend until the forms are ready.

Usually Mid-February. To Amend in TurboTax:

    • Sign in to TurboTax.
    • Scroll down to Your tax return & documents, select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.
    • If you only see the option to amend 2018 or earlier, it's because you can't amend an unfiled 2019 return. Instead, just select Pick up where you left off, make your changes, and disregard the rest of these instructions.
    • Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
    • Carefully follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.
    • When finished, we'll give you instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.
