How do I pay Virginia state tax?

You will choose your state payment method during the filing stage of your return. However, the Virginia Department of Revenue offers two payment methods.

  1. Credit or debit card (additional fee)Make a return payment (choose "Personal Income Tax") through Official Payments Corporation. A convenience fee is added to each payment you make with your card.
  2. Check or money order If you choose this option then you will mail your payment voucher along with a check or money order payable to Virginia Department of Taxation to:

Virginia Department of Taxation

P.O. Box 1478

Richmond, VA 23218-1478

Note: Include your Social Security number and the tax period for the payment on the check.

If you have already filed and need to view your chosen payment method, follow the directions in the TurboTax FAQ below. The directions given are for the federal return but your state payment method will be listed as well.

Check the printout or PDF of your return, and look for the State filing instruction sheet with the Turbotax logo.  If you owe tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay.

Read the state payment instructions carefully, since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system, and thus require additional steps.
