Why does Turbo Tax incorrectly think the W-2 shows state wage information (Boxes 15-17) for more than one state? It does not. My husband lives and works in NJ.

New York State?  No, it did not.

Would you send us a "token"? A token is a 7-digit number in our database that points to a "sanitized" version of your return, that is, all the personally identifiable information is masked, so that we in the Community don't have a clue as to who you are.

This would allow us to get past your puzzling symptoms to the heart of the issue.

Online

  • Log into your TurboTax Online tax return
  • On the left, click on Tax Tools
  • Under Tax Tools, click on Tools
  • In Tools Center, click on Share my File with Agent
  • TurboTax will give you a “token”, a 7-digit number
  • Post the token number in this thread
  • Be sure to add to that post “@” “billm223” (without the space in between) so that I will be notified

Desktop

  • Open your return in the desktop product
  • Look along the top and click on Online
  • Click on Send Tax File to Agent
  • TurboTax will give you a “token”, a 7-digit number
  • Post the token number in this thread
  • Be sure to add to that post “@” “billm223” (without the space in between) so that I will be notified

I will do that when I get home, but to be fair, I did that earlier in the week with an Agent and never heard back.  She was supposed to call me the next morning and never did.

So?  All of them are for wages earned in NJ by NJ residents from NJ based employers.

Please post the token you generated from your return in this thread and tag (@) the agent who made the request (if you remember). Responses are monitored for token numbers so an agent can follow up with you.

@Kgirl58 did you get this resolved?  I am running into the same exact issue.

Try deleting and re-inputting your Form W-2 in TurboTax Online:

  1. Select Tax Home in the left pane
  2. On the Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown on the right side of the Income & Expenses box, then select Start, Continue or Pick up where you left off.  If you see the Wages and income box, select Start
  3. Select Edit/Add to the right of Job (W-2)
  4. Select the dropdown to the right of the relevant W-2
  5. Select Delete
  6. Select Yes on the verification popup
  7. Select Add another W-2
  8. Enter all of your relevant information from the form

I've already deleted and manually re-entered the W2 in question.  I have also deleted the State return and started over.

If you are still getting an error, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2023" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  • Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  • A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  • On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  • You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  • Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

Here are the instructions if you are using TurboTax CD/Download:

  • Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows
  • Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  • Write down or send an image of your token number then place in this issue.
  • We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.
  • Please also tell us any states included in the return.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

I have the same problem. I have two W2s from NJ (mine and my wife's) and we both live in NJ but the NJ return says it "We noticed you have one or more W-2's with state wage information (boxes 15-17) for more than one state."  Even though it is NOT true the application takes me to screens to remove non-NJ income.  I am just not going to remove any income as it is all from NJ.

If you would like to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information it would help.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.

  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number and your state. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

TurboTax CD/Download:

If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:

  1. Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows
  2. Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  3. Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.

token number is 1222095 State is NJ.  is the only state on my return.  My wife and I both live and work in NJ and the W-2s I entered only list NJ as a state.

If you see CT or IN that's because other members of household needed but I should have either.

In your situation, do not click "Remove these wages". If that box is checked, TurboTax will remove that W-2 from your NJ-1040. Since you live and work in New Jersey, this income is taxable to the state of New Jersey.

The W-2 not listed on the screen has Box 1 wages that match Box 16. The second W-2 (that does appear on the screen Let's Confirm Your Taxable Wages) is a W-2 has a discrepancy between Box 1 and Box 16 due to the CAFE 125 and the 414(h) in Box 14. Cafe 125 and 414(h) amounts are taxable in the State of New Jersey, which is why Box 16 is higher than Box 1. For more information, please see Wages

Thank you for providing your token. If you have any further questions, please comment below.

@LazzL

@Kgirl58 @gt2887 You can also send me your token if you'd like. I will suspect that if you live and work in NJ, you are getting the screen to remove wages because Box 1 and Box 16 do not match on whatever W-2 you are seeing on the screen. Because these amounts are taxable to NJ, please do not remove the wages. My explanation can be found above. If you have any questions, let me know.

So we leave this message as it is?

Yes Box 1 and Box 16 are different amounts since box 1 does not include the breakdown from box 14 (health, pensions, etc).

TurboTax's message, should not state that it suspects a different state, since the state is the same.
