Why can't I delete a state return form?

I originally had an error on my W2 where I was taxed in the wrong state. I started my return and did a non resident return to get back to the money so I could pay taxes to the correct state. However, my employer just reissued me a w2-c form so now I no longer need the non resident return but I can't seem to delete it because it says I already registered. How do I get around this now since I no longer need the non resident form?

To delete a state tax return, follow these directions:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on State.
  • At the top of the screen, click on Your state returns.
  • At the screen, Status of your state returns, click Delete to the right of the state that you want to delete.

Why can't I delete a state return form?

@JamesG1 I don't have the option for delete. All I have are Edit or Start Over. I tried calling but they keep telling me to pay the $30 upgrade fee to just talk to a human being which is really annoying.

If you don't see the option to delete your state (you'll probably see Edit instead), you've already paid your TurboTax fees (including the state fee) or registered your free version while the state was on your return. If you've done either of these things, you can't delete your state return.

Since deleting your state return is not an option, you are left with the following options:

  1. You can create a new account and start over with a blank slate, which is a good idea if you are a new TurboTax user and you don't have a lot of history in your account.   OR
  2. You can switch to the Free File program if you qualify.  If you can answer Yes to any of these questions, you qualify:
  • Is your adjusted gross income (AGI) $36,000 or less?
  • Were you active duty military in 2019 with an AGI of $69,000 or less?
  • Do you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)?

Use the link above for instructions if you qualify and are interested.  You can't sign in from TurboTax.com; the Free File program has its own website that you have to use to access the program.

Why can't I delete a state return form?

I've been using turbotax for the last 6 years so I don't really want to create a new account. Also I'm not eligible to use that free file either. I'm considering just letting my NY nonresident form just go through, it's 0 income and 0 taxes since they fixed it on my w2-c anyways so it's not like I owe them anything and I'm guessing they'll just disregard it anyways (or contact my employer who will tell them the situation). Or does anyone know why it would be a bad idea to send in a state form that shows 0 income from that state and 0 taxes paid?

You may have an option to file the state form by mail when you check out, if so choose that option and just don't mail it.

Also, you can choose to mail all of your forms and simply not mail the state return.
