I'm a Maryland resident who contributed $2500 to each of my two daughters' Maryland College Savings Plans.
That should entitle me to a $5000 Maryland state tax deduction.
I tried following the instructions here (https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/discussion/maryland-allows-deductions-for-529-accounts...) but those instructions seem incorrect.
- Log into your return and click Take me to my return (I did this!)
- Click on State and then Your State Returns at top of screen (I did this!)
- If you have already entered your state, click Edit/Continue (I did this!)
- Go through state portion until you see the screen that says Here’s the income that Maryland handles differently (It doesn't say "Here's the income that Maryland handles differently" anywhere!)
How should I enter the information about these two contributions and get my $5000 deduction??
Verify your a full-year Maryland resident on the We've Recommended a Residency Status screen and click Continue.
Verify your County information and address are entered on the Tell Us Your Maryland Information screen, check the box I confirm my physical address is correct, and click Continue.
On the Tell Us Your Local Taxing Area screen, verify your city is entered or choose Not Applicable and click Continue.
On the Taxpayer's Health Care Coverage screen indicate if any dependents did not have health care coverage in 2020 and click Continue.
The next page is the Here's the Income Maryland Handles Differently screen and you will be able to access the Maryland College Savings Plan Contributions page.
After "Taxpayer's Health Care Coverage" screen, the "Here's the Income Maryland Handles Differently" screen does not appear for me.
Instead I get this screen:
I don't know what to enter here. It makes no sense to me.
And there is nowhere for me to enter information about college savings plan.
Just keep going through the screens until you reach the screen, Here's the income that Maryland handles differently. Then click on the Start box next to Maryland College Savings Plan Contributions (as posted in JeffreyR77's answer above).
If you have already gone through the MD interview, when you go back in to your return you will see the screen, Your 2020 Maryland taxes are ready for us to check. Click the Edit box next to Income. You will be taken right to the screen, Your 2020 Maryland taxes are ready for us to check.
