I’m currently doing my boyfriends taxes and something just isn’t adding up. At one of the jobs he had in the past year he made 20,000 dollars over a period of like 5 months but it’s showing that only 800 dollars of it was withheld for Federal taxes. How did that happen? I know he claims what he should (cause he always asks me) and when I input the w2 it makes it so that he OWES like 1500 in taxes when with all his other w2’s he would get a refund for like 2000. What’s going on? He’s always changing jobs and has been over the years and I’ve never had to have him pay anything before. He only made 35,000 last year so how is this possible? Is something wrong with his w2?

Your BF would have to ask the employer about that. If the W-2 is incorrect the the employer can issue a corrected W-2. But if your BF did not fill out a W-4 to have more withheld then it is what it is now. He can change it going forward if he is still working for that employer.

You can have the issuer verify the amounts. However, there could easily have been a mistake made either when the form was filled out or typed into program or when somebody looked up the tables. You should be checking the actual take home pay and tax withheld. I recommend every 3 months verifying the correct income and taxes. Use the following tools to help:
