Virginia State Return 2019 not calculating tax owed

Shows Amount of Tax on line 16 as $0, despite there being a positive taxable amount. Either tax tables are absent or not properly linked in the software. My free state came with TurboTax Deluxe 2019.

Follow these steps to reset the calculations, but let us know if this doesn't work:

  1. In the File menu across the top select Remove State Return.
  2. Confirm that you wish to delete the state return (this does not delete the program).
  3. Click on Online in the menu across the top and select Check for updates.
  4. After any updates install, close TurboTax and shut down your PC.
  5. Turn your PC back on and restart TurboTax.
  6. Click on the State Taxes tab.
  7. Click on Continue at the bottom the screen on the State taxes menu.
  8. Click Start beside Virginia.
  9. Continue through the program - this should take just a few moments.
  10. Run the Review to be sure there are no errors or overrides preventing calculations.

Virginia State Return 2019 not calculating tax owed

The suggested solution did not work.

Still shows $0 tax. Virginia 2019 tax table online show I owe, albeit not a huge sum.

I prepaid by the quarter in excess of tax I actually owe, but this amount is not being reduced as per tax amount from tax tables.

I would recommend you review your input in the My Info section of the return.

  1. Select "Edit" to the right of your name.
  2. Scroll down the page and review the answers to your questions.
  3. Ensure your answers to the state you lived in and any other state questions are answered correctly.   This is important if you are earning income in another state but living in Virginia or vice versa.
  4. Go back into the W-2 input under income. Select Edit for any W-2 forms and scroll down to box 15, State & Local Taxes.  Confirm your input against your W-2 forms.  Do the same for any other sources of income.

Once you confirm the input here, proceed to the state interview section.

Confirm your input and answers under the "General Info" section under the state.

If this does not resolve your issue, I suggest you contact us directly.
