I installed three velux skylights in 2025. On the Turbo Tax program, it asks for the QMID code/number. I reviewed the product and none was found. I called Velux, and they informed me that are not part of the program and have no QMID to provide me. They sent me to emergystar.gov website, which does have a product rating for the product, but not "code" to provide the program, which is demanding the QMID.
Suggestions?

In order to claim the credit you will need either a QMID code. You cannot claim the credit for 2025 if you do not have it. This comes from the manufacturer, if they are not participating, you would not be able to claim the credit on their windows.
Qualified manufacturer identification numbers. Beginning January 1, 2025, if you are claiming the energy efficient home improvement credit for specified property placed into service in 2025, you must include the four-character alphanumeric unique qualified manufacturer identification number (QMID) for each item
Velux has indicated that they do NOT provide QMID becuase they chose not to pay for the service. But the skylights are noted in NERC as meeting the requirements. Just no QMID. So we're stuck with federal clearance but the company not choosing to participate.
Velux must be some MAGA company; doesn't believe in climate change.
Can you use a dummy QMID, such as A1B2 (the template format suggested) to claim the Energy Star qualified Velux skylights under the energy efficient home improvement credit?
Velux had been promoting their skylights with solar-powered blinds as being eligible for the credit for solar energy property, however, they have since retracted that guidance - check this link.
I did find Velux on the Energy Star website and they do have skylights that qualify for the Residential Energy-Efficient Credit.
If your skylights do qualify for the credit, I would recommend contacting Velux USA to ask them for their QMID code so that you can claim the credit on your tax return.
Nearly all energy-efficient credits are no longer available in 2026, with only the Alternative energy fueling credit for home charging stations being available through June 30, 2026.
Roger,
Thanks for your reply. A bit of a circular discussion. I spoke with Velux, and as mentioned, they have dropped out of the tax benefit program. So there is no QMID available. Yes, they meet energy efficiency standards, but that goes nowhere except to mention it somewhere on the tax form as justification. And hope not to get audited. The earlier suggestion, to put a "dummy" QMID code (e.g., A1B2) may be cleared through the Turbo Tax program, because anything is put in the entry box, but again it may lead to a letter from the government about it.
Again, it may all depend upon the probability of the government calling it out, which based upon the current budgetary issues, may be close to zero.
did you figure this out? i have the same situation and dont know how to go about it?
Thanks!
As mentioned earlier, a dummy code may be sufficient to make the subprogram in TurboTax work. For the three (3) skylights that were $2500 each, plugging in the three line items and the dummy code (e.g., A1B2), generated a tax benefit of $600. On this matter, I will accept anything, as Velux won't help. And the figure will most likely not generate any audit (My refund is very low at this stage). The $600 figure may be the limit for this energy efficiency domain. Good luck!
I am not sure if TT dropped the ball on this one or the Federal government in explaining what is required. The tax credit is ONLY for true energy-efficient products, like solar-powered skylights or solar-powered hot water heaters. The producers get coupons from the Feds for solar only. If the product is not solar-powered, you will not receive a rebate, regardless of whether you have the required number. I installed both a hot water heater and a Velux skylight, but neither was solar (or hydro!) powered, so I am not going to fraudulently apply for the rebate and risk an audit, but that is just me.
I agree. All of my skylights are solar. So this should oertbut Velux did not want to participate in the QMID program.
Mr. Velux must be MAGA. I would call the Feds and ask how you can get your $600. Get the name of the person there and their number if they help you.
