Click on the File tab at the top of the desktop program screen.  Then click on Print/Save for Your Records.  Click on the Save a PDF button

On the Form Selection screen, choose what you want to save and click on Save As PDF

An alternate way from what was already mentioned is to download and install CutePDF or PrimoPDF.  After installation either program appears in your system as a printer.

To create a PDF, just choose say CutePDF as the "printer". Printed documents normally go to the default printer assigned in the system (assuming Windows, I don't know about Macs) so you do have to choose CutePDF from the system print dialog instead letting it go to the default printer.

Sending (printing) to either program results in a dialog that asks about a few questions about creating the PDF

I use both programs but an advantage that PrimoPDF has is, if the name of the PDF that you want to print to already exists, PrimoPDF will ask if you want to append to the existing document or replace it. CutePDF will only let you replace it.

A disclaimer is, my versions are fairly old and I have not checked out the latest versions of either programs for changes, like are they still both free and still essentially free of adding any adware spam.  I save without printing per the first answer for TurboTax returns, but both programs mentioned are handy for a multitude of reasons, i.e. PDF's are generally one of the document types accepted for various submissions.

The PDF is for your records. After 6 years Turbotax deletes the xxx.taxyyyy file. after 3 year including extensions the xxx.taxyyyy can no longer be opened and even with the desktop the app cannot be reinstalled nor will it open an old xxx.taxyyyy file. your only source for what was filed is the PDF file of your tax return.   Note that a PDF cannot be e-filed. it must be printed out and mailed in. in any case after 3 tax years expire, if you haven't filed the return for that year and are due a refund you can no longer collect it. you have made a nondeductible gift to the Federal government.

To add to that, if it was taken that way, I didn't mean to imply that a PDF could be efiled, just that it's useful in many cases where files, like say in Excel format, aren't an accepted format by many entities due to the virus potential while PDFs and JPGs are generally accepted. If I need to share some numbers in one of those cases, I print to PDF and submit the PDF.
