I am trying to file 2019 taxes and TurboTax is making me pay $90 for Premier and $50 for state taxes. I made under $12,000 last year and sold one stock at a loss of roughly $50 dollars. Why can’t I file for free and how can I get around this?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
When you enter you information, TurboTax will prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return. The free version is intended for taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without any schedules. The Free version does not support the sale of stocks.
visit www.irs.gov to find truly free federal filing
In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited.
There are 2 different Free versions. Turbo Tax Free Edition and the IRS Free File website. If you don't qualify for the Free Edition you might qualify for the Free File website.
There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.
To qualify for the Free File website you just need to meet one of these 3 things.
AGI $36,000 or less.
Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Click on Sign in at the top right. It may let you continue your return so you don't have to start over.
