My daughter is a full time student at Saint Louis MO snice year 2020 onwards. I used to live in CA. So we used to file her return as CA resident when she had income in 2020. However, in the year 2021
- She is still a full time student at MO
- I lived in CA in 2021 but moved to AZ on 1st of Jan 2022
- And she had no income during 2021
But we still want to file her return despite no income for couple of reasons.
- Use the IT return to correct her mailing address from CA to my current permanent address in AZ
- To keep the continuity of her tax records
With zero income, turbotax tells me that she can't file electronic but has to print and mail the paper. It had been a decade that I filed any paper. So I am not sure what has to be filed for particularly CA IT return. Can you pl. tell us does CA return not only need to have the 540 form, but do we need to enclose a copy of 1040 also?
regards

No you do not need a copy of Form 1040.
Do not attach any documents to your tax return unless specifically instructed.
Attach all the Form(s) W-2 and W-2G you received to the lower front of your tax return. Also, attach any Forms(s) 1099, 592-B, and 593 showing California income tax withheld.
If your tax return shows a refund or no amount due, mail your tax return to the following address:
Franchise Tax Board
PO Box 942840
Sacramento CA 94240-0001
You can try filing for free online with CalFile. I'm unsure whether you will be able to do this with no income.
